Social Studies 7th and 8th grades

Star Schools
I am a seventh and eighth grade English teacher at Mancos Middle School in Mancos, Colorado. My credentials include a B.A. with a teaching certificate from CU Denver and a M.S. in Elementary Education from Adams State College.  I have been teaching 6th, 7th and 8th grade English for 10 years in Southwest Colorado. I hope you enjoy the lessons that I have developed as part of this Star Schools Project.

Math Journal

Lesson Power Point

This lesson is designed to teach students how the skills they learn in English should carry over into all their subjects including Math.  It is important for students to learn that writing for their other subjects, especially Math is a different type of writing requiring the technical use of vocabulary for that subject accurately. Students will write up story problems stating the situation, stating the problem to be solved, explaining the process used to solve the problem, and state the answer.

Interviews with the Past
This lesson is designed to teach students how the skills they learn in English should carry over into all their subjects including Social Studies.  Using information gathered in Social Studies, student will write an interview with an introduction, questions/responses & conclusions relating to a character in early American history.  After reviewing oral presentations, students will be interviewed in front of the class by the Social Studies teacher.

My Resume

In this lesson students will create a resume about themselves using the templates in MS Word.  They will complete this task after finishing the resume worksheet.

Job Brochure
In this lesson students will create a brochure that will introduce themselves to either a prospective employer or their freshman teachers. First they will complete a prewriting activity to gather information, and then apply the information in the form of a brochure.

Solve the Crime
Detectives often use the scientific method to solve crimes.  Students will imagine that they are a detective who has been asked to solve the theft of cookies from a jar in the student cafeteria.  They will write down the steps involved in the method used to solve this terrible crime.
