Picture Collage

This lesson is designed to show students that photos can be combined to create a new picture.  The students’ pictures will be superimposed over pictures of locations that are easily recognizable as not being local in nature. The combined photos will be used as a writing prompt for a book written by the class using the Six Trait Plus One writing strategy.

Weather Graph

This lesson is to introduce first grade students to the basic weather patterns. The Inter-net will be used to check the weather locally and at four additional sites in North and South America to allow students to make comparisons between various points on the globe with more northerly and southerly locations than their location in southern Colorado. Students will be become acquainted with basic weather icons. The forecasted highs and lows will also be recorded. Student groups will record their weather information in files on the computer using copy and paste procedures.

My Journal

Power Point

Students begin writing in their own journals as early as kindergarten.  Writing begins with a picture and a few written letters that may or may not correspond to any words in the story the student orally relays. Later in normal development of writing skills, students are often satisfied with a simple sentence containing little more than a subject and verb.  This lesson is designed to encourage beginning writers to expand their writings and use more descriptive words.

Power Point Story

This lesson is to introduce beginning writers to Power Point.  The Power Point slides will be used to help the students write a story that has a beginning, middle, and end.  Each part of the story will be put on a separate slide.  The rather dramatic effect of changing the computer screen should help students with the concept that a good story as several distinct parts.

The presentation portion of this lesson will occur away from the school grounds.  The Power Point presentations will be posted on the school’s web site.  The class will visit the local library and find their Power Point presentations on the computers there.  Families will be invited to attend.  It will be an opportunity for families to find out about the many aspects of the local library.

My First E-Mail

This lesson is designed to acquaint first grade students with email.  Communications will be sent and received by the class both by traditional mail and by email.  The story “The Letter” in the book “Frog and Toad are Friends” by Arnold Lobel will be used as the anticipatory set for the group of lessons.  In this story Toad is sad because he never receives any mail.  Frog goes home and writes his friend a letter.  The letter is successfully delivered days later by a snail.  The story lists all the things Frog and Toad do while waiting for the letter.  The first grade class will keep a class journal of all the class activities while waiting for a reply.  The calendar will be marked with the dates the letters were sent and received at both ends.
