Middle School/Special Ed

Star Schools
I am a middle school special education teacher at Mancos Middle School in Mancos, Colorado. My credentials include a B.S. in special education and regular education from the University of Maine at Farmington and a M.S. in Reading and Learning Disabilities from Northern Arizona University. I have been teaching special education and Chapter 1 for for 17 years in Arizona and Colorado.
I hope you enjoy the lessons that I have developed as part of this Star Schools Project.

Learning Style Brochure
This lesson is designed to teach students how to identify personal learning styles, strengths, and characteristics that impact positive learning.  In the process the students will complete inventories on on-line.  The students will use the information that they have gathered about themselves to create a personal brochure explaining their learning strengths and helpful learning strategies.

My
Personal Portfolio

This lesson is designed to teach students how to develop a portfolio that documents past activities in middle school especially those activities that effect future learning.  It is important that students participate in this documentation in order to become aware that their past effects their future.  Students will also learn how to summarize this information.

Career Portfolio
This lesson is designed to teach students how to search and evaluate information on available career opportunities.  In their search they will take questionnaires, search for more information that helps to develop a list of pros and cons of the job, and search for necessary training for the job.  Students will also formulate in writing a summary of the information they found and analyzed for 3 careers.

My Life in Power Point

Lesson Power Point

This lesson is designed to teach students how to develop a PowerPoint presentation highlighting personal characteristics.   In the process the students will produce a final PowerPoint presentation that will be helpful for the student to present information to high school teachers as part of a transition meeting.

Transition Flyer
This lesson is designed to teach students how to create a flyer. In this lesson the flyer will be used to announce a transition meeting for that student as they enter high school.  It is important that students participate in their own lives taking the responsibility to ensure success for the future.  In the process students will learn that people are more receptive when planning takes place especially by the student themselves.  Students will also summarize the purpose of the meeting.
