I am a third grade teacher at Dolores Elementary School. I have a B.A. in Humanities from Fort Lewis College. I have a background in Early Childhood and taught in that field for five years. I have taught second and third grades in Dolores for three years now.
I hope you enjoy the lessons that I have developed as part of this Star Schools Project.
Web
Report
This lesson is designed for students to
become familiar with accessing the Internet to gain educational
information.In the process
students will access and read information from the Internet and identify
the main points of the reading. They
will need to launch a search for the information desired within a main
web site provided by the teacher.Students
will work in groups to accomplish the goals of searching for a specific
topic, identifying the main points, copying the information down and
presenting this information to the class.
Remaking the Mayflower
This
lesson is designed to teach students the size of the Mayflower in an
attempt to give them some perspective to the trip that the Pilgrims
undertook.After accessing
information from a web site, students will draw and label in perspective
to show the size of the ship’s rooms in comparison to a human. Then students will discuss the number of people on the ship and
the time they spent on the ship.
Design a Site
This lesson is designed to teach students to
recognize four basic parts of any web site and then use this information
to design one of their own.The
areas students will learn about are the written word (text), graphics,
background and page set-up. They will learn the appropriate vocabulary
to identify these parts.They
will be exposed to several examples from actual web sites that have been
pre-selected and saved onto favorites. They will work in whole group and
cooperative groups to accomplish these objectives.
Graphics for a Book
Students will add a variety of clipart
pictures to their paragraphs on the history of Dolores. Each year third graders go on a series of field trips to learn
about the history of their town and write paragraphs about the
experience.The paragraphs
will be typed up by the students who will then add Clip Art pictures to
their work.Finally,
students will save their work onto a common floppy disk. When all of the paragraphs are completed they will be compiled
into a book and distributed to all of the third grade students.
(See following lesson.)
3rd Grade Book
This lesson is designed to teach students
how to save their work onto a disk where existing work is already
stored.The purpose of this
lesson is to compile several students’ work on one disk, which can be
used to publish the work in book form. All the work is written, proofread and spell checked by the
students with the final editing being done by the teacher. The work is categorized by subject so the students who write
more that one piece will have work throughout the book. After students type their story into the document they will
run the spell check and proofread the piece for errors.
