A Webtask for adult learners

A regular printer page measures 8.5 inches wide and 11 inches long. When you type a letter, you always leave spaces around the outside of the text. That helps the reader focus on the words. The space around the text is called a margin.

In the activities below, calculate the width and height of the text area in each document.

Left: 1 1/2 inches
Right: 1 1/3 inches
Top: 1 1/2 inches
Bottom: 1 inch

Solution: There are many ways to solve a question, but the answer will always apply the rules for adding and subtracting fractions (To review those rules, click on one of the links above.)

Take the width of the document. Subtract the width of the left margin.

The text area of the document is 5 2/3 inches wide. Now find the height  in the same way.

 Mail Merge to send it to at least five different people. Print two of your letters and place them in your portfolio.
