How to solve the problem:

So if you want to solve a problem with an unknown (X) quantity, you often express it as follows:

20mph = 78 miles
_________________
90mph = X miles traveled

To solve the "X" problem, draw and X over the division line. Multiply the X points.

Multiply the top left with the bottom right, and the bottom left with the top right.

20X = 90 * 78
20x= 7020

Now, divide both sides by 20!

X 20/20= 1

7020 /20 = 351

X times 1 = X

7020 divided by 20 = 351

As you can see, X = 351

That tells you that the faster train traveled 351 miles while the slower train traveld 78 miles in the same period of time! If you want to see the view, take the slower train! Smell the roses!
